Hello lovely subscribers, I’m back from my travels, and I’ll have some new meditations posted soon. Today, June 5th, I felt moved to share this story with you.
Have you ever met an Earth angel?
I have.
His name was Michael. (No, not the archangel.)
He didn’t have wings. He wore a flannel shirt, thick glasses, and a baseball cap.
He bought me a dozen roses and made my day.
Let me explain…
Asking for a Sign
June 5th is the day I married Brian. He died of a heart attack sixteen years later.
When he was thirty-eight years old.
While he was pushing our six-month-old twin daughters in a stroller.
Devastating doesn’t begin to describe it.
That was in 1998. I managed to stitch my life back together in the years since. I’m now married to a beautiful soul named Paul who had a lot to do with that.
But June 5th is still a special day to me. Paul understands that. As we were raising the girls, he always believed that Brian was helping us from the other side. “We’re on the same team,” Paul said.
Brian used to buy me yellow roses. Every June 5th, Paul brings me yellow roses.
Through the years, Brian has had a way of letting me know he’s around. It’s happened too many times to count. (If you have lost a loved one, perhaps you know what I mean.) And through the years, I’ve gotten comfortable asking him to make his presence known, especially when times are hard. I ask him for a sign.
In 2024, after going through a rough patch, I needed some reassurance. So the morning of June 5th, I asked Brian to send me a sign - one I couldn’t mistake. I put on our favorite song and sang along with it, several times. Feeling the love we had shared, I started my day.
A Surprise Encounter
By late afternoon, I was headed to the grocery store when the thought occurred to me that I hadn’t yet received my sign. I got the groceries, checked out, and headed out of the store. As I was passing by the floral department, a man wearing a flannel shirt stopped me. This got my attention because flannel shirts in Houston in June are a rare sight.
The man told me that he would like to buy me a dozen roses. He assured me he wasn’t a “creep,” that he just wanted to do a good deed for someone. He told me I could pick out whatever I wanted and that he would pay at the register and bring me the flowers along with the receipt.
The hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
I picked out a bouquet with three red, three yellow, three white, and three pink roses. When the man returned with them, I asked him his name. “Michael,” he answered, smiling from under his thick glasses and the Astros cap he was wearing.
I introduced myself and told Michael that I wanted to share a little story with him about those flowers. I recounted Brian’s passing all those years ago and how I had asked for a sign from him that morning.
Without missing a beat, Michael told me, “You won’t believe how often people tell me a story like that when I buy them flowers. I think our loved ones use whoever is available.”
He smiled, and we shook hands. I went on my way with a full heart. I’m in that grocery store several times every week, and I haven’t seen Michael there since.
But there’s more…
When I walked into our home carrying the roses, one of my daughters was there. I couldn’t wait to tell her what had just happened. As I was in the middle of the story, she pointed to the digital photo frame we display in our living room. Out of about 250 photos cycling through that frame, there is one photo of Brian and me. Guess which photo had come up while I was telling my story.
An hour later, Paul and my other daughter walked in. By then, the roses were in a vase. Again, I told the story of meeting Michael, and again, right in the middle of it, the photo of Brian and me appeared on the frame. We all noticed it.
It’s Meant for You
In my experience, Earth angels exist, and our loved ones who have become our ancestors hear our prayers.
I think Michael is right. Our loved ones sometimes use Earth angels to deliver their message. So what is an Earth angel? It’s anyone who places themselves in the service of Spirit and humanity and Love. It’s anyone who makes themselves available.
If you have lost someone, I hope this story brings you a measure of comfort. When a sign comes, and it’s meant for you, there is a knowing that accompanies it. I can’t explain it, but it’s a very distinct feeling. I had asked for a sign that I couldn’t mistake. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up when it came.
There are Earth angels among us. They look like you and me. Perhaps you know one. Perhaps you can be one for someone. If you feel moved to do a random act of kindness, do it. You never know what it could mean to someone or what could happen when we place ourselves in the service of Love. Angels abound.
Have you ever received a sign from a loved one or encountered an Earth angel? I’d love to hear about it!
If you know someone who would find comfort in this post, please share it!
